Garage Doors in Toronto, OntarioPower's out.The door still needs to open.

The red emergency release cord lets you lift the door by hand when the opener has no power. We make sure it works, that the door is balanced enough to lift safely, and that the trolley re-engages properly once the electricity is back.

From the shop

A door you barely notice.

Many of the homes we work in have doors older than the people living there. Extension springs without safety cables, wooden sections that have taken on water, openers made before safety sensors were standard. We know how these doors were built and how to bring them up to today's expectations without ripping out what still works.

Repairs, parts and new doors

Every service listed here is done by hand, on site, by a technician who explains as they go. Look through the groups below, or call and describe the problem in your own words; both routes lead to the same place.

Springs

Springs & Hardware

Springs have a working life measured in cycles, and most doors reach it eventually. We fit replacements sized for your door, install safety cables where they belong, and test the balance by hand.

  1. Steel and nylon garage-door rollers with long stems lie beside a detached hinge on a workbench. — Garage Door Roller Replacement, Toronto
Garage Door Roller ReplacementOne of the little wheels along the edge of the door has a chunk missing, another sits crooked in its hinge, and there is a fine grey dust on the floor under the track where plastic has been wearing away.
  2. A person examines a central hinge joining two sections of a closed garage door. — Garage Door Hinge Replacement, Toronto
Garage Door Hinge ReplacementWatching from inside as the door opens, you can see the gap between the second and third panels open up on one side as they turn the corner into the ceiling, then close again. The other side stays tight.
  3. Gloved hands holding a vertical garage-door track and a wrench at its mounting bracket beside a door hinge. — Garage Door Track Repair or Replacement, Toronto
Garage Door Track Repair or ReplacementThe door climbs crooked, one side clearly ahead of the other. Nothing looks broken, but the two tracks sit different distances from the door, and one leans in toward the opening near the top.
  4. Person kneeling inside a garage reaching up along the vertical track of a white paneled door, with a toolbox and drill nearby. — Garage Door Cable Replacement, Toronto
Garage Door Cable ReplacementYour older door has springs along the tracks, and one cable has slipped off its pulley and dangles slack. The door lifts crooked and needs a shoulder to close, when it used to glide.
  5. Person holding metal bars beside exposed coiled springs above a garage door. — Torsion Spring Replacement, Toronto
Torsion Spring ReplacementThe door starts to rise, gets about the height of your knee, then shudders and reverses. The opener sounds strained, and the top section flexes as the trolley pulls on it, because the motor is doing work the spring used…
  6. Person in a jacket facing a closed white sectional door, with coiled springs and steel tubes on a wooden bench. — Extension Spring Replacement, Toronto
Extension Spring ReplacementA bang like a dropped toolbox came from the garage last night. This morning one of the long springs beside the track hangs in two pieces, and the door will only rise a few inches before the opener gives up and stops.
  7. A person stands beside a closed sectional door beneath its overhead spring assembly. — Garage Door Balance Adjustment, Toronto
Garage Door Balance AdjustmentSince the new insulated panels went in, the door feels like a different animal. It closes with a thud, the opener labours where it used to hum, and lifting it by hand takes a proper heave rather than a fingertip.

How a visit goes

Think of the opener as a helper, not a lifter. It is built to push and pull a door that already weighs almost nothing thanks to the springs; asking it to hoist a full-weight door strains the trolley, bends the top section and wears the gear drive.

Drawing: a house seen from the street. The van pulls up, the garage door is opened for the work, then it closes level and the porch light comes on.

2021 census · what it means at the door

  • 58%Older homes

About 58% of homes in Toronto were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census.

Hardware on an older door has often been through many winters: hinges with worn pins, rollers with tired bearings, bottom brackets rusted at the floor line. Replacing these in sets restores a smooth lift and takes a surprising amount of noise out of the garage.

  • 23%

Single-detached houses make up about 23% of homes in Toronto (2021 Census).

In condominium communities the outward appearance of a garage door is often set by the corporation's rules, down to colour and panel style. We check what the board expects before ordering a replacement door, so the new one is approved and matches the row without a second conversation.

If only one spring broke, should both be replaced?

On a two-spring door both springs have completed the same number of cycles, so the intact one is usually close to the end of its life as well. Replacing the pair gives the door two matched springs sharing the load evenly and a fresh cycle count on both sides. The technician looks at the remaining spring's condition and the door's configuration, then explains the reasoning so you can choose the scope with a clear picture.

Why is my door sitting crooked since the spring broke?

On a two-spring door, one intact spring keeps pulling on its side while the broken side goes slack, so the door lifts unevenly and a cable can jump its drum. The technician levels the door, reseats the cables in their drum grooves and evens the tension after the new spring is fitted. Rollers and track are checked for damage from the crooked travel so the door runs square again.

Why do springs seem to break in cold weather?

Cold makes steel slightly less forgiving and thickens the grease on the coils, so a spring that has already used most of its cycle life is more likely to let go on a frosty morning when the door is first opened. The cold is the final straw rather than the cause; the underlying reason is fatigue from years of cycles, sometimes helped along by rust and dry coils.

What photos help when I call?

A picture of the full spring assembly above the door, showing the centre bracket, both drums and how many springs there are, tells the technician a great deal. Add a close shot of the broken spring gap and any tag or colour marking on the cones, a photo of the cables at the bottom brackets, and one of the opener. These help confirm the door's configuration so the right springs and hardware are on the truck.

Is it all right to keep using the door until the visit?

Use the door in a way that keeps you in control. If the opener closes only while the wall button is held, do that only while you can see the whole doorway and nobody is near it. Otherwise close the door first if you can, then move it by hand with the manual release, and get help if it feels heavy or binds. Keep children and pets clear during any test. A door that reverses is being cautious on your behalf.
